Phelps, John Lewis “Barney” Salisbury age 91 of Quail Summit Canandaigua formerly of Sunnyside Farms, Marbletown Road, died on Sunday November 26, at the Wayne County Nursing Facility.

 

Friends may call Friday (Dec 1) from 7-9PM at The Cheney Funeral Home 70 Main Street Phelps. A memorial service will held on Saturday at 11 AM in the United Church of Phelps with the Rev. Shirley Filiatreau officiating. Private interment will be held at the convenience of the family in Resthaven Cemetery.

 

It is requested that memorial donations be made to the Phelps Historical Society, 66 Main Street, Phelps or the United Church of Phelps, 58 Main Street Phelps, NY 14532.

 

Mr. Salisbury was born on May 24, 1915 in Phelps, NY the son of the late John Lewis Sr. and Harriet LuLu Ringer Salisbury. He graduated from University of Pennsylvania Wharton School with a BS in Economics. He was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. Mr. Salisbury was a charter member of the Phelps Historical Society and was a member of the United Church of Phelps.

 

Mr. Salisbury was a fruit grower and owned and operated Sunnyside Farms. He was a life member of the NYS Farm Bureau and a Life member of the NYS Horticulture Society. He was a charter member of the International Dwarf Fruit Tree Association and was also a member of The Polish-American Agricultural Exchange. He received the Silver Award from the Polish government, the highest award in Poland, for his contribution toward horticulture. He also received an award from the University of Poznan. He had 75 workers over the years that came to America for a minimum of a 1-year education intern through the Church of the Brethren.

 

He also invented and patented the Home Freezer Aid Kit.

He was a member of the Phelps Rotary Club until 2005 when it ended its charter and then joined the Clifton Springs Rotary Club. He had perfect attendance for over 60 years and received the Paul Harris Fellow in 1986.

Mr. Salisbury was the outstanding scout in New York and was presented the award by Eleanor Roosevelt. He was the first Eagle Scout in Phelps. Mr. Salisbury was also a Scout Master for 10 years.

 

He was a 16-gallon donor of blood.

 

Mr. Salisbury enjoyed playing bridge, fishing, doing word searches and word scrambles.

 

He is survived by his wife of 67 years E. Louise of Canandaigua; sons John (Diane) Salisbury of Concord, NH; Philip (Mary) Salisbury of Springfield IL;

Paul (Jeanne) Salisbury of Newark, NY; Elizabeth “Betsey” (Joseph) Homer of Scotia, NY; and Sally (Mark) Zelonis of Zionsville, IN; 10 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; cousin Bob W. Salisbury of Geneva; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Arthur, Frank and Leonard.
