Richard Leigh Dunham
PHELPS - Richard L. Dunham, age 81, passed away Wednesday
(Jan. 18, 2006) at the Hospice of Rochester/Lifetime Care at St. Mary's
after an extended illness.
Richard was born Oct. 8, 1924, to Max and Leora Dunham and was the
grandson of George and Rena Butler of Phelps. He attended Phelps
Central School and then joined the Navy, serving on the USS Euraylie
in the Phillipines and also in Australia during World War II. He was a
member of the Phelps American Legion Seely B. Parish Post 457, the
Geneva VFW 2670 and the Union of Operating Engineers Local 545 in
Syracuse.
Friends may call on Friday (Jan. 20), from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Cheney
Funeral Home, 70 Main St. in Phelps. The Phelps American Legion will
meet Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. followed by the Geneva VFW. Funeral
services will be Saturday at the funeral home at 10 a.m. with the Rev.
Shirley Filiatreau officiating. Private burial will be in Oaklawn
Cemetery.
Richard was married to Betty Jane (Eysaman) Dunham, who passed
away in 1979. He was remarried to the late Margaret (Clarke) Dunham,
his loving wife of 24 years.
He is survived by daughters, Nancy (David) Osborn of Macon, Georgia,
Kathie (Jim) Lyons of New Hartford, Marge (Ed) Fuller of Newark; son,
Rick (Terri Stein) of Rochester; two grandsons, Jim (Tracy) Van
Damme and Tim (Donna) Van Damme of Clifton Springs; three
granddaughters, Stacey (Tim) Riemer of Charlotte, N.C., Deanna
Opdyke of Syracuse and Julie (Scott) Morgan of Penfield; seven great-
grandchildren, Jacob, Matthew and Zachary Van Damme, Cassandra
and Gabriel Van Damme, and Sydney Riemer and Brady Morgan;
stepchildren, Alan (Patty) Dunham and Patti (Frank) Guerrerri; several
cousins and stepgrandchildren.
Richard was predeceased by a great-grandson, Trevor Richard Van
Damme.
